ESSENDON will have the most players walking the Match Review Panel tightrope in round one as clubs prepare for the first year of a more lenient system.
With carryover points abolished and more fines introduced to replace one-match bans, clubs can expect to have fewer players suspended under the new-look MRP.
However, bad records will still be taken into account, with players who have been suspended for at least two matches in the past two seasons set to have their base penalties increased by one match.
Essendon has five players in this position - Paul Chapman, Dustin Fletcher, Jake Melksham, Nick Kommer and Shaun McKernan – while Gold Coast is the only club with a clean slate entering the new season.
The other bad record penalty players will need to keep on top of is the three strikes system for minor offences.
Rather than receive a one-match ban downgraded to a reprimand with an early plea, players will automatically be fined for their first two low-level offences, such as an intentional, low impact strike to the body.
Their third strike inside a season, however, will result in a one-match ban.
The only players to record strikes during the NAB Challenge were Rory Sloane (Adelaide), Joe Daniher (Essendon), Billy Longer (St Kilda) and Lindsay Thomas (North Melbourne).
