The Melbourne Football Club is pleased to announce that captain James McDonald has signed a new one year contract extension, for the 2010 season.

McDonald enjoyed another strong year in 2009, averaging 20 disposals while playing a number of roles in both the midfield and defence.  At 33 years of age, he is Melbourne’s most experienced player, with his leadership vital to the development of the Club’s young list.

McDonald is one of a long list of players who have been products of the successful Melbourne rookie list system, after being recruited with the 78th pick in the first ever Rookie Draft held in 1996. He has since achieved a range of honours, including being named Best and Fairest in 2006 and 2007, and All Australian in 2006.

McDonald has played 235 games for the Club since making his debut against Collingwood in Round 17 of the 1997 season.

Tim Harrington, General Manager, List Management, said, “James’ form has dictated that he plays on in 2010.  He has shown this year that he still has much to offer at the elite level, and we see his leadership as a huge asset to the Melbourne Football Club.  He sets a great example for our young players with his dedication to the team cause.”
