THERE were several key performances in Melbourne’s 24-point win over the Brisbane Lions at the MCG on Sunday.

Jesse Hogan’s four goals and 11 marks were critical in the win; Daniel Cross’ 26 disposals and work down back was strong; Max Gawn’s rucking, marking and ‘one percenters’ were again impressive and Jack Viney continued to take his game to another level.

But perhaps one of the most important games for Melbourne was the performance of Jeremy Howe, who finished with 22 disposals, and a team-high 13 marks and 17 uncontested possessions, playing down back.

It was his best game of the season and something he wholeheartedly agreed with.

“No doubt, it was definitely the most consistent game I’ve played [this season],” he told melbournefc.com.au.

“The way that the forwards were applying their pressure and the mids were closing out in the middle, allowed us backs to set up defensively.

“It allowed us to get the ball and reenter it in our forward half, so it comes down to the mids and forwards making our job easier – and that’s what happened against the Lions.”

Howe, who has played roughly “50/50” down back and up forward this year, said he relished being part of the defensive unit against the Lions.

“I did really enjoy it,” he said.

“We let ourselves down in the second half, but the first half set it up and that’s what we planned to do and that’s what we did before the game.

“I’m more than happy to play where I’m needed. Form has a bit to do with it, but I played a good game against Brisbane last year and they wanted me to go back and play there this year.”

Although the Tasmanian is known for his aerial feats, his flexibility is now an integral part of his game – and especially for the Demons.

“You’re not settled, but if you’re playing really well in the forward line and consistently, you’re not going to move,” he said.

“If you’re playing well in the backline, they’re not going to move you to the forward line.

“I’ve only been running at 65 to 70 per cent, so it gives them an ability to throw me around. But if I can nail down a role, then I can’t see myself moving back and forth as I am now.”
