LEADER Jack Viney says Melbourne got what it deserved against St Kilda at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The red and blue went down by 36 points and lost its 14th consecutive match to the Saints. Viney said it was a most disappointing day.

“We played some good footy in patches and got close, but overall, it was an inconsistent game and we didn’t deserve to win in the end,” he told Melbourne TV.

“You start winning and everyone gets away from their roles and tries to get a kick and a touch. It breaks down the whole system, so we learned that and we had to reset it at half-time.

“We felt like we did that and got right back in the game, with some good efforts, but in the last quarter St Kilda just ran away with it.”

Viney said there was no particular reason why Melbourne couldn’t break the losing cycle against St Kilda.

“I think it comes down to every game we play them – it’s got nothing to do with a hoodoo,” he said.

“They were the team that wanted it more and they deserved to win.

“That’s what it was and that’s what it has been the last few times we’ve played them.”
