COACH Paul Roos says he would’ve taken a 3-3 win/loss record if he was offered it entering 2016, but that doesn’t mean he’s satisfied with his side’s start to the season.
Melbourne will take on Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium on Saturday with that 50 per cent winning record, but given he took over the club in September 2013, on the back of just two wins that season, it highlights how far the club has come.
But speaking on Melbourne TV, Roos said his team needed to play at its absolute best every round.
“It’s an even competition and every week is a hard week and every week you’ve got to bring your A-game,” he said on Roos’ Views.
“I think we’ve shown a lot of improvement this year and a lot more consistency than last year and the year before definitely.
“We’ve also shown that when we’re off the boil a little bit, we can let ourselves down. That’s something we’ve got to keep reminding ourselves as a group, and we need to respond this week.”
Roos said the clash against the Suns was another important challenge, particularly after his team went down to St Kilda by 39 points at Etihad Stadium last Saturday.
“We’ve come off a loss as well and we need to respond also,” he said.
“We’ve responded every time this year and we’ve had a really consistent block of form and let ourselves down on the weekend, but St Kilda played a really good game of footy and credit to them.
“I think it just shows the evenness of the competition and it’s really evened up this year – and if you don’t bring your A-game, it doesn’t matter who you play, you’re going to struggle.
“We need to bring our A-game this week to give ourselves a chance to win.”
