JACK Watts says he is enjoying his football and being at Melbourne, but is eager to keep building his form before looking at his contract situation at the end of the year.
Watts, who is a free agent at the season’s end, said he wants to focus on his football this season and won’t bring forward contract negotiations.
“I probably wouldn’t think I’d change the view on that,” he said.
“I had a couple of good games, but the focus will be just to keep that going and have a good year, and play a consistent year – that’d be the main thing for me.
“It’s a pretty enjoyable place to be and the future is looking pretty bright.”
Watts, who has booted nine goals so far this season, including an equal career-best four against Collingwood last Sunday at the MCG, said being dropped for the final round against Greater Western Sydney at Etihad Stadium last season was “a bit of a kick in the guts”.
“You use that as a little bit of motivation over the off-season and pre-season, but once you get back into it, it’s long gone,” he said.
“You get straight into this year and try and do your bit for the team.”
Watts said he had enjoyed being settled up forward this year.
“It’s good to have a set role, which you can concentrate on for a couple of weeks, where you can do your homework and improve as the weeks go on,” he said.
“I’m really enjoying working up there with Hoges, Frosty and Pedo, and we’ve some pretty gun small forwards. Hopefully Jeffy comes back this week. We’ve got Kenty and Kenno, so it’s been really enjoyable and we’re starting to gel well.
“Hopefully, we can keep that going.”
