BERNIE Vince says Melbourne’s six-point loss to the West Coast Eagles at Domain Stadium was “bitterly disappointing”.
Vince said to be in front at every change and then “lose by a kick” in the end was incredibly frustrating.
“They’re always good [matches to play in] those close ones – they’re not so good when you don’t finish in front,” he told Melbourne TV.
“Just a few of those little errors that we made – and a few free kicks against us – we had 10 free kicks against us in the last quarter … so it’s going to hurt.
“We tried to take them on and we missed a few shots at goal, which was disappointing, but I thought throughout the four quarters, we attacked it mostly. We were way up in contested possessions and tackles, so it’s disappointing.
“[In terms of our goalkicking] it wasn’t so much the conversion – we should’ve lowered the eyes a bit and hit the guys in better positions. A lot guys had a bit more time than what they thought they did at times.”
Vince said there were some tough calls made by the umpires in the final term.
“It was a wet, slippery game and the umpires generally let a little bit go, but they threw their head back a bit, didn’t they – a few of those midfielders for them?” he said.
“The umpires have got a job to do and there were some crucial free kicks paid against us that hurt us.
“But they were 50/50.”
Vince said he would still look back in a week’s time and find the loss disappointing.
“[I’ll still be] disappointed that we lost, but it was a good effort – we’re not resting on having good efforts now,” he said.
“We need to win those games if we’re going anywhere as a footy club, so we’ll be bloody disappointed this week.
“But we’ll have a look at it and there will be things that we can do better and we’ve just got to get better. It starts with a good preparation this week.
“We’ve got our flight back from Perth and then we’ll recover quickly for next Sunday, so that’s all we can do.”
