MIDFIELDER Jack Viney says Melbourne will take a lot of confidence out of its come-from-behind win against the Giants in round one.
The Demons came back from 21 points down at the final change to overrun GWS in the last quarter.
Viney said the final term performance was a credit to Melbourne’s tenacity and belief.
“The boys get a lot of confidence out of this game,” Viney told Melbourne TV.
“We had to fight for it in the end and full credit to GWS, they played well for three quarters.
“You take the four points and hopefully it kick starts a good season.”
After a strong opening quarter, Melbourne struggled in the middle period of the game, kicking just one more goal before three-quarter-time.
Having had their ball movement stifled by the Giants for a majority of the match, Viney said the Demons’ determination allowed them to open up the game in the final quarter.
“To be the boys’ credit we believed that we would come good, we wanted to stick to what we were trying to achieve,” he said.
“The boys could have easily dropped their heads and said ‘it’s all a bit too hard.’
“But they said ‘nah screw it, we will dig deep and try and do what we had been practicing during the pre-season’ and we out did them in the last quarter.”
Viney was a clear standout for Melbourne across the game, with coach Paul Roos labelling his performance “exceptional”.
The hard-nosed midfielder racked up 20 possessions in the first half, and 32 overall, and was dominant around the stoppages in his 50th game.
“I think defensively, I was solid and then offensively that stuff kind of comes,” he said.
“I was happy with my game today, but we will look at the tapes on Monday and look to get better for next week.”
The hard-fought two-point victory came off the back of three tough pre-season wins.
Viney said Melbourne’s form showed that the team was beginning to reap the rewards of believing in the club’s direction.
“I think we are starting to gel now, we made a lot of inroads over the pre-season,” he said.
“I guess we are starting to really believe in what we are trying to achieve at the footy club and the players are driving that and we are starting to see some results.”
