Rodan's new run
New recruit David Rodan has a simple remedy to the club's onfield issues - run, and take on the game more
He is excited about the leadership role he will play in fostering the emerging group.
And he thinks the Demons need to take the game on more to improve on their disappointing showing in 2012.
While his remedy for improvement was simple enough, it sat comfortably with what he has become renowned for in 176 games with Richmond and Port Adelaide.
"Run with the ball, take it forward and drive it in deep," Rodan said.
"We have some forwards now in Pedo (Cameron Pedersen), Mitch Clark and Dawesy (Chris Dawes) has come in as well, so [we've] got some pretty big forwards in there as well [and we] want to get it to them. Once you get it to them they'll do the rest."
Rodan said everything one would expect from a player given a third chance at a club on the rise. He was excited, grateful for the opportunity and looking forward to a big pre-season.
He expected his experience to be valuable as the season got underway and was excited about the prospect of mentoring some of the team's youngsters.
"I enjoy that type of role where I can work one on one but also on the training track," he said.
"Obviously I've played a few more years than some of the guys here, so hopefully I can pass on some stuff."
Somewhat of a surprise selection by Melbourne, the 29-year-old was traded to Melbourne during Gillette AFL Trade week in exchange for the very busy draft pick No.88.
From that perspective he represents little risk. He can run, is agile and will provide some explosive pace from the stoppages, an asset Melbourne lacked in 2012.
And even after three reconstructions, including two using the LARS method, he says his knees are fine.
He is confident, settled and ready to go.
"We're hoping to get some success as soon as we can," Rodan said.
