MELBOURNE has completed a trade with North Melbourne, securing pick No.8 in the 2019 National Draft.
The Demons, who already have pick No.3, will now enter the draft with two first round selections after finalising the deal on Tuesday afternoon.
In exchange for the top-10 pick, Melbourne sent pick No.26, 50 and its future first round selection to the Roos.
General Manager of Football Operations Josh Mahoney was excited by the result of the trade, saying there were several factors behind the club’s decision to push for a higher selection this year.
“Part of our strategy during this Trade Period was to improve our draft position by using our future picks,” Mahoney told Melbourne Media.
“Next year’s draft will have a high number of talented Academy players, and we value another top selection in this draft.
“Clubs can trade picks right up until the draft and on draft night under AFL rules and having picks 3 and 8 gives us options and flexibility.”
This trade comes on the back of last Friday’s dealings with Fremantle and Hawthorn, where Ed Langdon became a Demon and Sam Frost departed to the Hawks.
With former Giant Adam Tomlinson also joining the club as a free agent, the Dees have had a successful two weeks, with the Trade Period closing on Wednesday night.
As it currently stands, Melbourne’s two top-10 picks are its only selections in the 2019 National Draft.
