ADELAIDE is holding firm on its demand for two first-round draft picks in exchange for defender Jake Lever, but is prepared to deal solely with Melbourne for now.

The two clubs met at Etihad Stadium on Monday, the first day of the NAB AFL Trade Period, and Demons football manager Josh Mahoney said the early signs looked good.

"Met with Adelaide today and we did make some progress today. We've both got the intent to get a deal done, which is positive, and hopefully we can do that in the next few weeks," Mahoney said.

Melbourne has already stated it is prepared to give up its first and second-round selection in this year's NAB AFL Draft to land Lever.

Adelaide list manager Justin Reid didn't rule out the possibility of talking to clubs about Lever.

"We've got good dialogue with Melbourne but we'll just see where that gets to over the next fortnight," Reid said.

"There's still another nine clubs in Melbourne but we're certainly having a chat with Melbourne at the moment."

Meanwhile, Mahoney reiterated key forward Jesse Hogan was not only off-limits, but that his future had not even been discussed.

Fremantle didn't ask about the West Australian's availability on Monday.

"I'll repeat what I've said quite a few times. We haven't had any discussions at all about Jesse Hogan, internally or externally, about him not being at Melbourne next year, and I think Jesse and his management have come out and said that as well," Mahoney said.
