VICTORIAN Mel Hickey says she understands the history and love of State of Origin, and is proud to continue the tradition of wearing the ‘Big V’.

Having played for Victoria four times previously, Hickey said she was fully aware of the passion for representative football.  

“I’m old enough to remember how revered State of Origin was back in the day, so it’s nice for the footy public to have a bit of that back in the AFL,” she told melbournefc.com.au.  

“I would love to see it continue alongside AFLW. I think we’re starting another new little tradition here. Hopefully everyone not only aspires to play AFLW but also for your state, as it’s a huge honour.

“I think it’s also the stuff you reflect on once your career is over, so it will be special.”

The Melbourne joint vice-captain said everyone was “pumped” to be involved in Saturday night’s clash against The Allies at Etihad Stadium.  

“[Victorian coach] Deb [Lee] gave us a really good chat before [training at the Holden Centre on Friday],” she said.

“Everyone looked sharp. It was a bit windy, which doesn’t make things as easy, but I think we were pretty clean given the circumstances. We also worked on some of our structures that we’re going to play.

“I’m a very competitive person, so I want to get the win. The Big V jumpers are my cherished jumpers, so one day I’ll get them all framed and put them up somewhere.”

Hickey said it was great to have State of Origin back on the calendar.

“Before AFLW came along, representing your state was a big thing, so it’s nice to bring it back out,” she said.

“I’ve never played with the likes of Brianna Davey, so it’s special for me to able to play with someone like her and Sarah Perkins.

“You watch these girls and play against them in state league, but we’ve never actually played together, so it will be really cool to get out there.”
