BERNIE Vince says he couldn’t have asked for a better 200th AFL game, as Melbourne produced a stunning win over the Adelaide Crows at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night.
Melbourne came from 28 points down in the second quarter to win by 41 points – a 69-point turnaround – capping off Vince’s milestone in fine style. Vince said it was equal to any home-and-away win he’s been involved in.
“It’s right up there. When I was with Adelaide we had the ‘Showdown’ and they were massive, and this was right up there with one of them, and that was the closest thing you will get to playing a final,” he told Melbourne TV.
“To beat Adelaide, they are in such good form. Last week was a bit of hiccup for them, but they’re a really outstanding team that no-one has beaten here for a while.
“I had a little chat to the big fella upstairs and he wrote the script. He didn’t want to tell anyone until tonight and he has come through with the goods.”
Vince said Melbourne’s comeback – after Adelaide piled on six unanswered goals in the first half – was testament to the character of the group.
“It’s unbelievable – the way the boys dug deep, for not only myself, but the whole team was fantastic,” he said.
“We were really focused on contested ball, and aimed to try and get 100 tackles and we were very close (90). It was a great effort, right from the start.
“Adelaide played pretty well there for patches – they score so quickly and are so dangerous. We shut them down when they started that run on. From there to get it back on our terms, we just kept turning up to contests and tackling and were really physical with their good players. And we got the job done.
“It’s just an unbelievable effort – an unbelievable day. I’ll never play 200 games again and I’ll take the win.”
