THE OPENING round of next year's AFL Women's competition could go head-to-head with the finals of the Australian Open tennis.
The League has told a meeting of club chief executives it's keen to give the AFLW Grand Final "clean air" by staging the game in the weekend off for men's teams after the JLT Community Series.
However, to reach the Grand Final by that weekend, the second season of AFLW would have to begin on the Australia Day weekend.
Chief executive Gillon McLachlan said it's something that will require further discussions.
"That is clearly a three-day weekend, a lot of people away, and it's the final of the tennis, and we think respecting the tennis and getting clean air for the women is an issue as well," McLachlan told reporters on Thursday.
The AFL Commission is set to decide on how many clubs will receive a licence for an expanded women's competition for 2019.
McLachlan indicated the League hoped to inform clubs whether they had been successful or not by the end of August.
Sydney and Port Adelaide are the only clubs not bidding for a place in the expanded league.
