CO-CAPTAIN Jack Viney says blustery conditions were not the reason for Melbourne’s disappointing four-point loss to North Melbourne at Hobart’s Blundstone Arena on Saturday.
Heading into the final quarter with the breeze at their back and a six-point difference, Viney said the game had been Melbourne’s to win.
“It was close all game,” he told melbournefc.com.au.
“We got ourselves into a position where it was a winnable game in the last quarter but we just couldn’t get it over the line.
“It was our quarter to win; we had the wind which put us in a good position but they [North Melbourne] fought and scrapped and we just couldn’t score.
“Props to North for the way they went about their last quarter. There will be some good learnings for us.”
After narrowly losing to North Melbourne in Hobart last year, Viney said Melbourne were prepared to handle the unique conditions at Blundstone this time around.
“From one side of the ground, it [the breeze] comes across and generally favours one end of the ground.
“However, we planned for that and we knew that was coming. There were structures around that aspect of the game that were good but we just broke down in other areas.”
Viney said the loss was one that the team would move on from quickly, as it prepares to fly interstate again to face the GWS Giants in Canberra next week.
“There’s still four more opportunities this year to play our brand,” he said.
“We’ll review today and reflect on our performance because there’s certainly some good learnings that will help us to improve and get better.
“There’s also a point though where you can’t dwell on it and you have to move on; it’s not going to make you better dwelling on it.”
