MAX Gawn can win this year’s Brownlow Medal on Monday night, says midfield teammate and fellow ‘Charlie’ prospect Clayton Oliver.
Although Oliver is firmly focused on this Saturday’s second preliminary final clash against West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, the 2017 Melbourne best and fairest said he thought the 2018 All-Australian ruckman could win this year’s Brownlow.
“I think Maxy will be very high up there,” he told Melbourne Media.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if he wins it.
“He’s had an unbelievable year and I’m going to be on the table supporting him.
“Excitedly, if he does win it, it’ll be unreal.”
Oliver also had “100 per cent” belief that Melbourne could get the job done this weekend and then launch into this year’s Grand Final.
“We’ve beaten them twice now [in WA in the past two years], so it’s pretty exciting,” he said.
“We’re not too confident or arrogant about it, but we know what we need to do and if we stick to our structure, we’ll be fine.”
Oliver said the addition of co-captain Jack Viney back into the side, since Melbourne’s most recent win over Eagles in round 22, was another boost towards its cause.
“He’s an unbelievable leader,” he said.
“He does everything. He fights to the death and he’s a competitor and I love playing alongside him.”
