BILLY Stretch says his father Steven was “stoked” when he told him that he’d be making his AFL debut this weekend.
Stretch, who will play his first game against the Sydney Swans at the MCG on Saturday night, said his parents were thrilled.
“Dad was pretty stoked for me when I told him and Mum was rapt. I’m sure he’s pretty proud and excited as well. It probably brings back a few memories for Dad as well. He can probably remember his first game as clear as day,” he told melbournefc.com.au.
“I also told my housemates Jimmy [Toumpas] and Alex [Neal-Bullen], who were rapt for me, so it’s a pretty happy household at the moment.
“How good is it that Jimmy’s [back] in the side too, so I’m looking forward to running out with him too. He’s been in really good form, so he deserves his opportunity.”
Stretch said his parents had played a major part in his football. For the record, Steven played 164 matches for Melbourne from 1986-93 and won the 1987 club best and fairest.
“They’ve (Mum and Dad) been a massive part of the journey, so it’s a pretty special moment for me,” he said.
“I can’t thank my parents enough for everything they’ve done over the past few years.
“They’ve been incredible and I’m very lucky to have fantastic support.”
