ANOTHER disappointing day at the MCG leaves the Demons 16th on the AFL ladder, but co-captain Jack Viney says his side needs to continue to look forward.
Melbourne was poor for the majority of the game on Sunday afternoon, falling by a flattering 26 points to the Giants.
“There were a few positives to take out of the last quarter but overall disappointing,” Viney told Melbourne Media.
An experienced GWS side proved too good from the outset, restricting the Demons to just one major in the opening half of the game.
“I think GWS executed a really strong game plan early,” Viney said.
“They just didn’t allow us to generate much around the ball.
“We really couldn’t get going offensively and they made us have to slow the ball right down.”
The Dees were unable to get going when the game was on the line, minus 68 disposals and 17 inside 50s in the first half alone.
But a seven-goal final quarter gave Melbourne something to take out of an otherwise lackluster performance.
“You’ve just got to fight – fight and scrap,” Viney said.
“I think that’s the positive thing, it’s quite easy in those situations to just go into your shell.
“But to the boys’ credit, they were up for the fight.
“They were willing to dig in and try to find some positives out of the game.
“That’s good to see and hopefully we can take that momentum into next week up in Darwin.”
It's been a difficult start to 2019 for the Demons, battling an injury list that has continued to grow, but this misfortune has provided the team with an opportunity to blood some young talent in recent weeks.
“Whilst we are missing some experience in our team, I think some of those additions really bring some excitement into the team,” Viney said.
“Oskar (Baker), I think he felt a step up from VFL to AFL last week – he still did really well for a debut – but then to see him respond really strongly today, that’s great to see. Seeing a young player find his feet at AFL level is terrific.
“I think Marty Hore has been playing some terrific footy as well and really establishing a spot in the team.
“There are some good things to come out of it. We will keep building and keep looking forward to some guys coming back from injury.”
The Dees will now look ahead to next Saturday's trip to Darwin as they take on Adelaide in Round 11.
