Final quarter

Goals were tough to come by in the last term.

St Kilda star Lenny Hayes kicked the first major at the 16-minute mark and when skipper Nick Riewoldt converted in time-on, the Saints were home.

Third quarter

It was a low-scoring third term, with just four goals added - two from the Saints and a couple by the Dees.

Jack Steven added his second and Beau Wilkes kicked his third to put the Saints up by 15 points.

But when Lynden Dunn kicked truly and Clint Bartram chimed in with one in his 100th game, the Demons trailed by just three points.

Second quarter

The Demons took control for much of the second term, when they booted four of the first five goals.

Melbourne hit the front when Rohan Bail kicked his second for the quarter, giving his side a 10-point advantage at the 24-minute mark.

But when Stephen Milne booted his 500th career goal deep in time-on, the Saints regained a two-point lead at the long break.

First quarter

Melbourne started the match in fine fashion, when Brent Moloney and Matthew Bate registered the first two goals.

But the Saints hit back with three in a row to hit the front.

Nathan Jones bobbed up with two goals in time-on, as it became a goal-for-goal contest late in the quarter.

But St Kilda took a slender lead into the first change, leading by nine points.
