BALL movement coach Mark Williams runs through the 22 players who played in Melbourne’s loss against Hawthorn at the MCG
Matthew Bate: Bater was pretty good. He worked really hard up the ground and did the basics well. He played in front, took some strong marks and kicked well at goal when the opportunity arose. He must continue to work on his positioning in the forward line, and his running patterns.
Jamie Bennell: Jamie came on as sub, and had two possessions. At that stage, it was very hard to get involved in the game. He must continue to build on his work ethic and impact in games.
Lynden Dunn: Dunny’s disposal effectiveness was 92 per cent with his 13 possessions. He took some good strong marks by playing in front, and provided a good target at half-forward. We need Dunny to use his size, strength and aggression more often to break open packs and to provide crumbs for our small forwards. He kicked two goals and was steady overall.
James Frawley: Although Chippa had goals kicked on him, a lot of those resulted from our poor turnovers in the midfield. These turnovers left him exposed, and ‘Buddy’ Franklin made us pay.
Col Garland: Col had a big job on Cyril Rioli and did some really good things. He provided some good rebound off half-back and took some strong marks under pressure. He must continue to work on his leadership and direction out on the ground.
Brad Green: Although Brad kicked four goals, he was in and out of the game. He provided a very good target for us to use one on one, but he wasn’t able to take all of his marks and convert some of the good work. He continues to grow in his leadership and direction, both on and off the ground.
Jordan Gysberts: Jordie had limited possessions, but was in a position to receive the ball on numerous occasions and wasn’t used. His defensive game continues to improve each week. He also had seven tackles, which is another great step forward for Jordie.
Jeremy Howe: Jeremy had a good game. He had 14 possessions, and impacted with all of them. He finished with three goals and took some telling marks in general play. He continues to grow in confidence and experience with every game.
Mark Jamar: The big Russian had 11 possessions and 16 hit outs, which is not what we’ve come to expect from him. He probably lowered his colours on the day. Mark must continue to focus on his confidence, and impose himself on the game with his physicality.
Nathan Jones: Nathan was quiet early, but worked his way into the game as it progressed. He used the ball pretty well, and provided great connection for his teammates to use through handball receives. Nathan also had three scoring involvements.
Addam Maric: Addam was in and out of the play. He looked unsure on occasions and at other times took the game on, which we need Addam to do more often. He set up a couple of scoring opportunities and with better ball use, he could’ve hit the scoreboard himself.
Stefan Martin: Stef was one of our better players and competed very well in the ruck. His defensive game was good, he had 21 disposals and took the game on aggressively when in possession of the ball. Stef continues to grow in confidence with every game he plays.
Jordie McKenzie: Jordie was probably beaten on the day by Sam Mitchell, who was very effective. But in true Jordie fashion, his aggression and determination were out there for all to see. He had 11 tackles, which is just what we’ve come to expect from Jordie. He gives his all every week.
Brent Moloney: Brent was probably beaten on the day. Although he still had great involvement at stoppage, with seven first possessions and eight clearances, his opponents were equally effective away from stoppage and in general play. His tackling was aggressive, and as always his direction on the ground was fantastic.
Daniel Nicholson: Daniel did some good things and made a few mistakes. He used the ball well when he had the opportunity, and provided good rebound off half-back. He also laid some strong tackles. He continues to move forward as a young defender in his first year of AFL.
Ricky Petterd: Ricky’s defensive side of his game was very good. He had 13 possessions, but must continue to do the basics well. He got caught behind on a few occasions. Overall, his movement around the forward line was good. He provided a good target and led with purpose. He also made an outstanding smother on the last line of defence, which saved a certain goal. It was a great example of life or death footy.
Jared Rivers: Jared had nine intercept marks and switched the ball really well. He defended feverishly with 10 spoils. He continues his very good form.
James Strauss: Straussy’s physicality continues to improve. His form is solid. He kicked in really well from full-back, and is starting to pull the trigger on options he didn’t in earlier games, which is a real plus for us. The defensive side of his game has been good, and he continues to work on his ball handling and offense.
Colin Sylvia: Col was very quiet. At times, he wandered through the game and didn’t involve himself enough. He didn’t have enough impact with his possessions. We need Col to focus on his offensive spread away from stoppage, and his defensive positioning at stoppage and in general play. He is an important player and we need more from him.
Luke Tapscott: Luke was very aggressive at the ball and the opposition. He provided some exciting passages of play. His focus continues to be the balance in his game between attack and defence.
Jack Trengove: Jack was quiet and looked a bit flat coming off the Darwin trip, which can happen to young players. He marked the ball well and his involvement in play was effective, but overall he had limited impact on the game.
Jack Watts: Jack was a little bit quieter than he has been in previous weeks. His work-rate continues to be outstanding. He continues to provide a target for our backs to use on a counter-attack, and his contested marking has clearly improved. This was another important game to get under his belt.
