Todd Viney’s season assessment
Kelvin was good as a rookie. At certain stages, we were really happy with the way he played and improved at VFL level. He played some good games and showed some lightning pace with his forward line pressure. He’s got exactly what we’re after, so he’s one to watch out for next year.
Round-by-round assessment
Comments made by 2011 Melbourne coaching staff members Mark Williams, Brad Gotch and Kelly O’Donnell
AFL: Round 1 v Sydney Swans
Injured: hand
VFL: Round 1 v Geelong
Kelvin was a little bit rusty, because he’d been out with a finger injury. Considering it was his first game back, he was lively around the packs and had 12 disposals. Brad Gotch
VFL: Round 3 v North Ballarat
Kel was much better this week. He got his pressure skills up and kicked a goal. He should’ve kicked a couple. He looked better on the drier surface and the bigger ground with a bit more space. Brad Gotch
VFL: Round 4 - Bye
VFL: Round 5 v Frankston
Kelvin kicked three goals and did his job. He provided some pressure and class around the ground at times. His used the ball well with his goal kicking. Brad Gotch
Kel struggled a bit. It was the type of day where he needed to win the ball with one touch. Instead, he paddled the ball a bit. He still chased hard, but didn’t kick any goals and for a small forward, we needed a bit more out of him. Brad Gotch
VFL: Round 7 v Bendigo Bombers
Kel kicked three goals and played one of his better games for the year, which was timely. He had been a bit up and down and his position was being questioned, so he responded. Brad Gotch
Kel went off early injured with a corkie. Brad Gotch
VFL: Round 10 v Sandringham
Injured: quadriceps
VFL: Round 12 v Coburg Tigers
Injured: quadriceps
Kelvin was totally shocked by the conditions - remembering he’s a WA boy. That’s the coldest and wettest that he’s played in for a long time. He started OK, and then he just numbed up, I thought. He had five possessions in the first quarter, but then not much after that. Brad Gotch
Kel had a remarkable 20 tackles and kicked a goal in our 169-point win over the Dolphins. Brad Gotch
Kelvin came back to the seniors after having 20 tackles in the reserves. He had 10 tackles, four chases, and had a hand in the goal scoring. He was important in the dynamics of the game, and showed himself to be a pressure forward. We knew he had that in him, and it was good to see. Brad Gotch
Kelvin was OK. He only had eight touches. Considering what he showed the previous round, he was disappointing. But he still managed to do some very good pressure skills. He ended up with nine team acts, which included six tackles. He needed to try and hit the scoreboard more by working harder to the fall of the contest. Brad Gotch
VFL: Round 21 v Werribee Tigers
Kel produced a really consistent effort over four quarters. But he cost himself a very good rating because he kicked three behinds and one out on the full. He had nine pressure skill acts, which was excellent. Brad Gotch
