MELBOURNE has boosted its midfield stocks, selecting prolific midfielder Maggie Mahony with selection No.21 in the 2024 Telstra AFLW Draft.
A competitive and contested ball-winner, Mahony lined up for the Oakleigh Chargers, Vic Metro and Collingwood VFLW side this season, despite a mid-season collarbone injury curtailing her season.
The 163cm inside dynamo accumulates the football with ease, averaging 27 disposals per game at VFLW level this year, as well as 26 per game in the Coates Talent League.
An elite endurance athlete, Mahony also possesses the ability to dispose of the ball on both sides of her body.
Mahony is a product of the Glen Iris Gladiators as a junior footballer.
Following the draft, Melbourne’s AFLW List Manager Todd Patterson praised the talents of Mahony.
“Maggie's a two-time premiership player for the Oakleigh Chargers,” Patterson told Melbourne Media.
“She's also an elite hockey player being in the Victorian pathway previously but this year she really devoted herself to football.
“She's an inside midfielder who can also play half forward, is really low to the ground powerful, nice and clean and has good footy IQ.
“We're really excited to bring her on board and to add to our depth in that area.”
