Casey Demons faced a challenging game against a calm and consistent Coburg Lions side, ultimately succumbing to a 26-point defeat.
Blake Howes was Casey's standout performer for the day, particularly in defence. His 31 disposals were a testament to the heavy pressure exerted by Coburg’s forwards. Howes' efforts in thwarting numerous Coburg attacks kept Casey in contention for much of the game.
Bailey Laurie had a routine outing with 27 disposals, five tackles, and five clearances. Laurie’s ability to find the ball and his tenacity in contests were highlights, though he was often outclassed by his direct opponent, reflecting Coburg’s fast-paced midfield performance.
Koltyn Tholstrup demonstrated his grit and determination, battling hard all day. He collected 21 disposals, nine tackles, and five clearances and also managed to slot a well-deserved goal, exemplifying his all-around contribution to the team.
Tom Fullarton marked his 50th VFL game with a solid performance, scoring two goals, collecting 19 disposals, and contributing four clearances and 18 hitouts. Fullarton's versatility and experience were evident, providing a steadying influence for the Demons.
Both late inclusions, Harvey Neocleous and Caleb Lewis, made significant impacts by kicking two goals. Their ability to step up under pressure and convert opportunities provided crucial sparks of hope for Casey. Neocleous' consolation goal in the dying moments of the game highlighted his fighting spirit.
Casey struggled to penetrate Coburg’s defence, which consistently intercepted and thwarted forward advances. Mitch White, Casey’s top ball-winner with 31 disposals, made desperate attempts to move the ball forward but was often met with strong resistance from Coburg.
Andy Moniz-Wakefield also had a noteworthy game, finishing with 29 disposals. His ball-winning ability and efforts in transition play were essential in keeping Casey competitive.
The game’s turning point came in the second quarter when Coburg outscored Casey by seven goals to one, shifting the momentum drastically. From then on, Casey fought valiantly but couldn’t close the gap. The third quarter saw goal-for-goal action, with Mitch Szybkowski adding to the scoreboard, but Coburg maintained their lead.
Ollie Sestan had a quieter game than his usual standards but still managed to contribute with a goal.
Ned Moodie rounded out the scoring in the first quarter, where Casey initially led by 15 points before Coburg's dominance took over.
Casey was ultimately outclassed by a composed and consistent Coburg Lions side. The Demons will need to regroup and refocus as they prepare to take on Collingwood at Casey Fields next Sunday.
