This season, Melbourne Football Club (MFC) has had its share of knee injuries, with Clint Bartram, Jamie Bennell and Max Gawn all out for the season.

Sudden knee injuries in athletes can result from an awkward fall, collision or twist of the knee joint. Knee pain and inflammation can also occur over time, in athletes who have overused their joints due to continuous activity.

Club Nutritionist Joanna Shinewell says her first response to knee injuries amongst the Demons is to discuss the cause with MFC's doctors and physiotherapists, then build on each player's nutritional needs.

“When an injury occurs there can be so many things that have happened so it becomes an individual need basis,” says Shinewell.

So where does our nutritional treatment plan begin for knee injuries amongst MFC's star players?

Fish oils are well-known for their beneficial, strong anti-inflammatory action. Inflammation is the first response to tissue injury but itself can become a chronic condition causing tissue destruction, pain, and immobility if not treated. Taking BioCeuticals® Pure EPA Max Strength can help MFC's players by calming the inflammation and pain caused by knee injuries. Pure EPA Max Strength contains 500mg of EPA omega-3 fatty acids for a super-concentrated formula!

As a companion to fish oils, calcium is a must for maintaining bone health. Calcium citrate and MCH-Cal™ (microcrystalline calcium hydroxyapatite) assist in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. BioCeuticals® AdvaCal® is an advanced calcium supplement with added nutrients important for the maintenance of healthy bones including vitamins D3 and K1, and the minerals magnesium, boron, silica and zinc.

For healthy bones, muscles and strong immunity, every Demon is prescribed BioCeuticals® D3 Drops Forte, Australia's first liquid vitamin D supplement. The working group of the Australian and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society, Endocrine Society of Australia and Osteoporosis Australia state that a significant number of Australians are deficient in vitamin D. Plus, vitamin D has been shown to help the absorption of calcium.

Nutritional supplements, alongside an individually tailored training plan will help support the relief of pain symptoms and calm inflammation, and could influence a faster recovery for injured Demons.
