BERNIE Vince says the notion of running with Richmond superstar Dustin Martin is a massive ask.
Speaking on AFL 360, Vince said with a smile that it wasn’t an idea he’d suggest, even though he has tagged – and quelled – some of the game’s best players.
“I don’t know how to stop him? I haven’t seen anyone do it. No one has really done it well,” he said.
“It’s tough because he can do everything. He can kill you in the middle, he can go forward. What did he kick six on the weekend? That’s his big strength.
“Not that he’s ever been real quiet in the midfield, but he can go forward and dominate. He is just so dominant.”
Although Nathan Jones did an outstanding job on red-hot Hawk Tom Mitchell last round, Vince has played on the likes of Patrick Dangerfield and Rory Sloane with aplomb.
Trent Cotchin could be another option, if Vince doesn’t get the job on Martin.
“I’ve actually tended to go to Cotchin a little bit against Richmond in the past. You can’t be locking down everyone, can you?” he said.
Vince had the job on Lions star Dayne Zorko recently, and he was told he had the role when he was flying up to Brisbane.
“Every now and then I do tag. I did a couple of weeks ago against Zorko in Brisbane,” he said.
“Whatever ‘Goody’ (Simon Goodwin) tells me really – he doesn’t really tell me until pretty late.
“He told me at the airport when we were flying out. He doesn’t give me a lot of preparation time.”
