Melbourne has used its first two picks in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft to select the highly rated midfield duo of Tom Scully and Jack Trengove.
Scully was taken with pick one and Trengove with pick two, however, their final selection order was deemed irrelevant as Melbourne rated them as the clear standouts and were unable to split them.
Scully a natural left-footer is a prolific ball winner with extraordinary endurance. He can use the ball to affect on either side of his body and is hard at the contest.
During 2009 he captained Vic Metro and was named their most valuable player after averaging 25 disposals (76% efficiency) and five clearances per match. He was the leading hard ball gets player for the Championships averaging five per match and ranked second overall for clearances behind Tasmania’s Ryan Harwood.
Tom followed up his impressive 2008 NAB AFL Under 18 Championships with another standout carnival in 2009 which culminated with All-Australian honours for a second consecutive year.
He also played nine matches with the Dandenong Stingrays in 2009 and none better than his season opener against Gippsland where he gathered 34 possessions, eight tackles and eight marks in a best on ground performance.
Trengove is a beautifully balanced and creative midfielder who appears to have few deficiencies. He is a very composed player and his skills are at such a level that he appears always to have time, even in tight traffic.
He stamped himself as top selection at the draft with an outstanding 2009 NAB AFL Under 18 Championships where he won All-Australian honours and was named South Australia’s most valuable player. He averaged 23 possessions (including nine contested) for the Championships at an efficiency of 72%.
Trengove was South Australia’s leading player for hard ball gets, contested possessions, clearances and score assists. His ability to kick important goals was particularly impressive, finishing with a total of five for the Championships.
He was the standout player in South Australia’s win over Vic Country at AAMI Stadium with 17 kicks, 10 handballs, seven clearances, six hardball gets and three goals.
He has taken the step up from reserves to senior level football with Sturt in his stride and was a very influential player throughout the team’s finals campaign. His performance in Sturt’s preliminary final against Glenelg was exceptional. In a best on ground performance he gathered 16 kicks, 13 handballs, eight marks and three tackles to help the Blues to a narrow five point win.
Trengove was unable to attend to the 2009 NAB AFL Draft Camp due to his finals commitments with Sturt but showed his elite level of endurance at the state screening session with a 15.3 in the beep test. His speed was also strong as he posted a sub three second 20-metre sprint time.
