KEY defender Tom McDonald says Melbourne’s 105-point loss to Hawthorn at the MCG on Saturday was one of the worst he’s experienced at the club.
Speaking to Dee TV post-match, McDonald said it was a poor performance after Melbourne kicked the opening two goals of the match.
“It was an embarrassing game after the first five minutes. We were in a really good spot, challenging them, but then it was as though the life got sucked out of us after the first minutes and there was just no real fight back after that,” he said.
“It was one of the worst losses I’ve been involved in and I thought we’d come a long way since we had these sort of losses in my first couple of years.
“I thought we might be past it and then last week was tracking that way, but then we were able to find a way to peg them back and make it a bit more respectable against Sydney, but this week there was just none of that.”
McDonald said coach Paul Roos put it back onto the players post-match, saying it was up them to turn it around next Sunday against the Western Bulldogs at the MCG.
“[He just said] it was embarrassing and there was not a whole lot to learn from that game, if we go back and review it,” he said.
“[He said] the challenge was – can we can do something about it next week, then we’re not just capitulating and wasting the season. But if we keep going the same way we have in the last couple of weeks, then we’re just wasting time.
“He just put it back on the guys and said it’s up to us and asked if we want to give up the season or not? So we’ll very much see what’ll happen during the week and next weekend and what the opinion is on the challenge.”
