MELBOURNE has added to its history, securing the 2023 McClelland Trophy.

The newly evolved McClelland Trophy recognises the best-performing club across both the men’s and women’s competitions, with the champion club awarded $1 million in prize money.

Points are awarded based on home-and-away wins within a calendar year, with four points awarded for each victory in the men’s competition, and eight points awarded for each win in the women’s competition (taking into account the shorter season).

The Melbourne AFL men’s side finished fourth on the ladder in season 2023, while Melbourne’s AFL Women’s team are currently sitting on top of the ladder with one game left in the home and away season.

Melbourne CEO Gary Pert acknowledged the history-making award and all-club effort.

“This award is a fantastic reflection of our entire club, and one we’re incredibly proud to achieve,” Pert said.

“It is testament to the efforts of our players, coaches and staff, across both our men's and women's programs, as well as the Board, Executive and our broader administration department, who all work tirelessly in the pursuit of excellence.

“None of this would be possible without the passion of our loyal members and supporters, who wear their red and blue with pride. On behalf of the club, I would like to thank the Demon faithful for their continued and unwavering support.

“With one home-and-away match remaining of the AFL Women’s season, we look forward to pushing ourselves to greater heights, in the quest for further success this year.”

The AFLW Demons continue their campaign in Round 10, taking on Brisbane in a Grand Final rematch this Saturday 4 November.
