REIGNING Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott Memorial Trophy winner Brent Moloney says Melbourne’s first win of the season was a “huge relief” for the players.

Speaking after Melbourne’s six-point win over Essendon at the MCG on Saturday night, the former vice-captain said the victory helped ease the intense scrutiny somewhat.

“We’ve been building for this for the past month or so - the way we’ve been training and the spirit around the place,” he said.

“It’s great to get the win, but we move onto Collingwood now.”

Moloney, who collected 23 disposals and was a key contributor in the win, said the players had stuck tight since its miserable 101-point loss to Sydney Swans at the SCG in round eight.

“We spoke as a group, just as players, after that game,” he said.

“We made a pact not to play like that again and ever since then we’ve been fantastic.

“[We played well for] three quarters last week and we had a real focus to fight it out and win an arm wrestle for four quarters and I think we did that.”
