MELBOURNE'S forward line has shown greater potency throughout the JLT Community Series and forward Christian Petracca has revealed the simple reason why.
The Demons have scored 92 points and 116 points in wins over the Western Bulldogs and Carlton, respectively, and Petracca puts the efficient scoring down to the selfless mindset of his forward-line teammates.
"It's a little motto that we have – it's the old 'lick of the ice cream'," Petracca said on Tuesday.
"If you get an assist, you'll get your lick of the ice cream sometime soon.
"It's worked. I gave a few off last game (against the Dogs) and I was fortunate to get on the end of a few this game (against the Blues)."
Petracca kicked four goals, with one goal assist, from 19 disposals in a best-afield display in the Demons' 54-point thumping of the Blues on Saturday.
The previous week against the Bulldogs, Petracca was credited with two goal assists to go with his 13 touches and solitary major.
"I've been pretty happy with my last two games. It really happens with guys like (Jesse) Hogan and (Sam) Weideman really being unselfish and that's been the motto of our forward line this year," he said.
"Playing your role for the team is what is going to get you a game, it's not about high possessions or kicking goals… I know it's only JLT but the signs we're showing to our fans is great for the future."
Petracca has won plenty of plaudits for his own form, with Demons great David Schwarz comparing him to Adelaide Brownlow medallist Mark Ricciuto.
The powerful forward has maintained a level head and believed completing a full pre-season was the key reason behind his form surge.
Petracca lost almost six kilograms in the off-season and has dramatically improved his endurance running.
The third-year forward is injury-free, having recovered from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his debut season, and a broken toe that interrupted his summer before the 2016 season.
He said the continuity in his training has made a huge difference.
"This has been my first full pre-season ever," Petracca said.
"That's where I feel like I've improved a lot is in my running, especially that longer stuff over 500m."
Petracca laughed off comparisons to Adelaide champion Ricciuto.
"It's only JLT, I haven't really done anything in the game yet," he said.
"It's obviously good to get compliments from guys who are legends of the game but you've got to focus on the here and now.
"The minute you get ahead of yourself the minute they come to bring you down, which is a good thing."
