MELBOURNE will have seven selections, including four ‘live’ picks, in the 2012 NAB AFL Draft, which will be held next Thursday on the Gold Coast.

The AFL confirmed there would be 107 selections in this year’s NAB AFL Draft, including 79 live picks, three father/son selections (Melbourne’s Jack Viney, Essendon’s Joe Daniher and Bulldog Lachlan Hunter), 24 promoted rookies and one Queensland local talent selection when the second list lodgement was finalised on Thursday.

The Demons have already locked in Viney, an outstanding young midfielder, at No.27 and will use selections No.73 and No.74 on elevated rookies Michael Evans and Daniel Nicholson.

This means Melbourne will claim up to four new players with picks No.4, No.49, No.53 and No.70 in this Draft.

But the Demons do have the option of holding over selections for the NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft on December 11.

Already Melbourne has been one of the most active players in this year’s recruiting period.

It has acquired dual Geelong premiership player Shannon Byrnes as an unrestricted free agent, former Tiger and more recently Power midfielder/forward David Rodan, ex-Roo big man Cameron Pedersen and 2010 Collingwood premiership player Chris Dawes via trades.

Northern Territorian speedster Dominic Barry was also traded from Greater Western Sydney via the expansion rule trade and former Geelong defender Tom Gillies was claimed as a delisted free agent.

The Demons have also banked 17-year-old Western Australian key forward Jesse Hogan, who will be eligible to join their list in 2014.

Hogan was viewed by many as a potential top three to five pick in next year’s Draft pool.

Melbourne also has two selections available in the NAB AFL Rookie Draft, which will be held on December 11.

Meanwhile, AFL general manager of football operations Adrian Anderson said the AFL had been encouraged with the inaugural Free Agency Period and the regular Trade Period.

“The Free Agency rules were introduced for 2012, after a detailed negotiation over several years with the Players’ Association, with the aim of providing players with long-term service at a club the ability to determine the next step in their careers, in recognition of their service, while also enabling our clubs to consider all the list options available to them for their long-term planning” Anderson said.

“The Free Agency period, leading in the Trade period, was extended this year to give both clubs and players the maximum opportunity in the first year of operation to assess their options.”

Anderson said a total of 41 players had moved clubs through either the free agency, trade rules or expansion club list establishment rules, compared to 28 (2011), 21 (2010) and 23 (2009) players respectively in the three previous seasons.

“We will review with the AFLPA and the clubs the first year of operation of Free Agency, including the length of the Trade and Free Agency period, to see if it is appropriate, but clubs and players were able to make considered decisions around their lists, or their career paths,” he said.

Anderson said Free Agency would need to be considered over some years to assess its full impact on the competition. But he said the first year had seen a mixture of players moving to clubs higher-ranked on the ladder, in search of potential finals opportunities, as well as players moving to clubs lower-ranked on the ladder, in search of greater on-field opportunities.
