ANGUS Brayshaw says it was a consistent team performance resulted in Melbourne’s 39-point win over St Kilda at Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Despite his side’s struggle to produce four quarters of football early in the season, Brayshaw said the continued focus had started to pay off.
“In the first month, we’ve been a bit inconsistent,” he told Melbourne Media.
“It’s good to put it all together and I think when we play like that, we’re pretty tough to play against.”
Brayshaw was prolific in Melbourne’s third consecutive win over the Saints, finishing with 32 possessions, three tackles and a goal.
The 22-year-old said after missing the first three games of the season, his confidence was continuing to grow.
“I’ve been putting in a lot of work and I think I’ve been building over the last four weeks,” Brayshaw said.
“If anything, it’s just a nice little tick that what I’ve been doing is working.
“I’m feeling pretty good at the moment.”
After a long journey back from “repeat head knocks” – Brayshaw suffered four concussions in a one-year period – coach Simon Goodwin was full of praise.
“With Angus, it’s been 12 months of trying to build his confidence back up to play the game we want him to play,” he said.
“The last two weeks we’ve got him on the inside of the midfield again and we just want to see him do his best work.”
After playing across the half-back and wing against Hawthorn and Richmond – rounds four and five, respectively – the return to the midfield has so far been a success.
Brayshaw racked up 10 contested possessions and finished with a 70 per cent disposal efficiency on Sunday, taking his season average to 68 per cent.
The coach reinforced the promising signs.
“That’s where we drafted him – to play inside-mid,” Goodwin said.
“That’s exciting for us as a club, to have Angus back to his best and playing some really consistent footy the last few weeks.”
While he has enjoyed getting back in the heart of the action, Brayshaw understands the need for flexibility.
He said he’s ready to play his role, wherever the position may be.
“That’s where I was playing all of my junior footy, and where I got drafted out of playing for Sandy (Sandringham Dragons), so I think that’s naturally where I play,” he said.
“Having said that, we’ve got a group of maybe 12 guys who can probably play through the midfield, and the half-back and half forward-type role.
“Whatever Goody (Goodwin) needs, and whatever the team needs, I’m happy to do.”
The Demons now find themselves with four wins and three losses, and will head up to the Gabba to face the Gold Coast Suns in round eight.
Brayshaw said with a six-day break, along with travel, recovery will now be a big focus.
“I think what we’ve been really good at doing, probably since the four-day break [between rounds five and six], is making the most of the time we’ve got,” he said.
“We rebounded and played really well against Essendon off a short break, so I think we’ve just got to continue to do all the little things.
“It’s just making these little things part of what we do, and the last couple of weeks you’ve seen four quarter performances, which is probably a combination of everything we’ve been doing.
“I think we’re on the right path and we’ve just got to keep going now.”
