DARWIN’S humid conditions proved to be a talking point on Saturday night, creating a wet weather-like affair at TIO Stadium.
The temperature was still sitting at 25 degrees when the first ball was bounced at 7.10pm local time, making for an interesting content between Melbourne and Fremantle.
With his side coming out 54-point victors, Demon small forward Bayley Fritsch said they knew what they were in for.
“We were all prepared for it,” he told Melbourne Media.
“It’s my first time up here in Darwin and all the boys got around all the people that hadn’t been here and told us that it was going to really dewy.
“The second half was pretty much like playing wet weather footy, to be honest.”
Simon Goodwin also acknowledged the setting, with the humidity all part of the spectacular surrounds.
But the coach said it didn’t prevent the team from showcasing some positive signs.
“I’m sure it wasn’t a pretty game to watch, as it was quite slippery,” he said in his post-match press conference.
“But in terms of the way we wanted to play around the contest, and also our defensive transition – it was strong.”
Following on from a four-goal performance last week against St Kilda, Fritsch finished with 25 disposals, one tackle and one behind.
The 21-year-old has just missed one game so far this season – he didn’t play against Richmond in round five – averaging just under 17 disposals.
And he’s lapping up his first year at the red and blue.
“I’m enjoying every game and taking every week as it comes,” Fritsch said.
“I’m just trying to play my role.”
