Todd Viney’s season assessment
We really didn’t get to see the best of Aaron this year. He was heavily tagged early in the year and then he got injured. Unfortunately, he didn’t have the fitness to make an impact on the game. He needs to get his body right for the pre-season.

Round-by-round assessment
Comments made by 2011 Melbourne coaching staff members Mark Williams, Brad Gotch and Kelly O’Donnell

AFL: Round 1 v Sydney Swans
Aaron did very well. He was tagged heavily early, but once he got up the ground and found the footy, he was able to use the ball. Aaron is important to the way we play. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 2 v Hawthorn
Aaron produced some flashes of brilliance, but also made some uncharacteristic turnovers. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 3 v Brisbane Lions
Aaron fumbled a little bit early, but bounced back and got better as the game progressed. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 4 v Gold Coast Suns
Flash was in-and-out of the game. He had a very good third quarter and kicked a couple of goals for the match, but we really needed him to focus on his tackling. That’s an area he’s really made his own with his game over the years. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 5 - Bye

AFL: Round 6 v West Coast Eagles
Aaron didn’t have the impact he would’ve liked. He needed to work hard at the basics. He was the small forward who put a patent on forward pressure and he must focus on this area of his game. With continued hard work his form will improve. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 7 v Adelaide Crows
Aaron had a huge impact. As a leader it was great to see him stand up under pressure. His ball use was outstanding, as was his work-rate. It was a welcome return to form. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 8 v North Melbourne
Aaron was in and out of the game. He did some really good things with the ball, but he missed a couple of targets with his kicks, which was unlike Flash. When he got the ball, good things happened for us. He needed to work on the structure within his game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 9 v St Kilda
Aaron didn’t involve himself in the game enough and didn’t make Clint Jones defend him enough. Mark Williams

VFL: Round 18 v Geelong
Aaron was fairly consistent over four quarters, during his first match back from injury. He made a solid contribution, despite the match being one-sided. Aaron made some trademark runs and hit players with pin point accurate kicks. He also had six tackles. Brad Gotch

AFL: Round 20 v Carlton
Aaron came back into the team after a long layoff with a knee injury. He had seven scoring involvements, kicked a goal and had four tackles. He lacked his usual zip, but will be much better for the run. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 21 v West Coast Eagles
Aaron played below expectations. He fumbled and missed opportunities to impact the game. We need Aaron more involved physically and we also need him hitting the scoreboard as well as setting up goals. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 22 v Richmond
He didn’t involve himself in the game nearly enough. He made some poor decisions structurally and with the ball. Aaron was reported and subsequently suspended for a week. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 23 v Gold Coast Suns
Suspended

AFL: Round 24 v Port Adelaide
Injured: knee
