MELBOURNE captain Nathan Jones says he always felt the Demons could improve their ball movement this early in the season.
The Demons were the third-lowest scoring team in the competition in 2015.
They have improved to ninth in that measure after four rounds, partly due to a better ability to transition the ball from defence.
Quick play from the back half against Collingwood on Sunday saw the Demons kick six goals in the opening term.
The week prior, Paul Roos' men tallied 20 goals in a five-point loss to North Melbourne.
"Internally we did (have confidence we could move the ball better in the initial rounds)," Jones said.
"We believe in the way we play and we think it stacks up.
"There are some key areas we have to bring every week, but when we do that, we feel like we can take it up to anyone."
Richmond looms as Melbourne's next opponent, with the Anzac Day eve match a clash the skipper said his team would relish.
The Tigers are 1-3 and will be desperate for a win after going down by 68 points against West Coast last Friday.
However, the Demons' ability to fight off a Collingwood comeback will give Jones confidence his side can withstand Richmond's challenge.
"I was definitely impressed by our resilience to continue to put up the barriers and really lock down," he said.
"(The Pies) really started to crack in and get momentum, and that's the danger in the game these days. Teams ebb and flow with momentum and I felt like we arm-wrestled it back in our favour."
Melbourne will get Bernie Vince back from suspension to play the Tigers. Jeff Garlett is likely to return from a rolled left ankle injury that has seen him miss the past two games.
