MELBOURNE midfielder Brent Moloney is aiming to return to the club's leadership group after he was sacked as vice-captain last month.

Moloney lost his title after an off-field indiscretion but said he still hoped to return as an official leader of the Demons.

"Definitely. I want to be back in the leadership group. I'd love to be vice-captain of the footy club again. That's a goal of mine," Moloney said.

Moloney said he still saw himself as a leader among the players and that he had not approached his game any differently since being stripped of his title.

"Nothing's changed for me. I believe you don't need a title to lead," he said.

"Ever since whatever happened, the focus has been to keep leading the way I was and keep driving these young guys and try to get the most out of them."

Moloney has been one of Melbourne's best players this season, averaging 25 disposals and five inside 50s per game.

He has starred in a depleted midfield that in recent weeks has lost Mark Jamar and Jack Trengove to injury and suspension, while Tom Scully has not played all year because of a knee injury.

Scully will most likely make his comeback in the VFL this week and Trengove is due back the following week as his three-week suspension comes to an end.

But Moloney said the absence of Jamar had been the biggest blow.

"Jamar's a massive loss. He's an All-Australian ruckman and we hope we can get him back really soon," he said.

"We have a pretty good connection but he's not out there. I've been working pretty closely with Stef (Martin), as all the other midfielders have. We've got to live by that and hopefully we can keep up the same form. Stef's been in really good form."

Friday night’s clash with Carlton will be preceded by a performance from singer Olivia Newton-John who will sing to raise money for the Cancer and Wellness Centre named in her honour.

Moloney said the fund-raising initiative was particularly important for his football club as president Jim Stynes fights his own battle with cancer.

"Jim is an inspiration to us all. We hope he can get up there and sing before the game and have a bit of fun," he said.

"We haven't really spoken about that but I'm sure him and Olivia will work something out."
