JACK Watts says “everything” failed to come to fruition against the Kangaroos, resulting in Melbourne’s second greatest defeat of the season – a 41-point loss at the MCG on Sunday night.
Watts, who was one of Melbourne’s best with 23 disposals, said the Demons fell away structurally and at stoppages.
“It was very disappointing for the players – going away from what we do best, which is the simple things, playing our role, listening to what the coach wants and doing what is expected,” he said.
“We just totally went away from that and that is the most disappointing thing, because if we play the way we know we can play, we are right in that game. We just let them walk all over us and it was a disappointing result.
“We were just allowing them to have frees behind the ball. Our defensive effort wasn’t there and they just got a lot of easy ball and took it forward pretty comfortably. Any team in the AFL is going to score, if they get that type of freedom.
“So we are really going to have to bounce back hard next week and get back to what we do – team footy and playing our role because it’s a massive game next week against the Bulldogs.”
Watts said it was a backwards step from Melbourne’s recent encouraging form, which has included four wins this season.
“It shouldn’t take a spray from the coach to get that (the job) done,” he said.
“I think in the second half against Essendon [last round], we really started to get going and we had been showing really good signs, but today (Sunday) was definitely a step back from what we’ve been doing.
“But just as quickly we can turn it around and have a big week on the track because it’s a massive game against the Dogs [next round]. They beat us earlier on in the year in a game that was really tightly contested and we really want to come out and show the way we play.”
