Speaking after the event, Oliver said it was a moment he’ll never forget.
“I think the whole family is over the moon. Mum was crying, it was great – I can’t believe it,” he told Dee TV.
“Honestly, I had no clue. I didn’t think it was going to happen. I thought it could be a lot later than pick four. I didn’t pay too much attention to the media, but a few of my friends did, who were saying it, but I didn’t want to believe it.
“I don’t know where it came from to be honest. It came out of nowhere. I was just amazed and a bit shocked to be honest.”
Oliver said he was an inside midfielder who was “kind of a natural footballer”. And the boy from the bush said he was looking forward to moving to the city.
“It’s going to be great. I’ve got cousins in East Bentleigh, so if I get home sick I will go and see them, or just come back to Echuca – it’s only a two-hour drive,” Oliver said.
“[I just want to] focus on the pre-season and I want to complete the full pre-season. I haven’t done a full one in about two years, so that will be my focus for this year.”
Oliver said he used to support the Brisbane Lions, because “Black, Brown and Voss” were his favourites.
“I just jumped on the bandwagaon. I was four or five years old, so I just followed whoever was winning and when they won the 2001 grand final I jumped on from there,” he said.
