Sylvia: We must make a stand
By Matt Windley

MELBOURNE forward Colin Sylvia says it is time for his club to "stand for something". His scathing assessment came as AFL legends Dermott Brereton and Jason Dunstall ripped into the Demons for another listless performance. Five-time premiership player Brereton said Melbourne was not fierce enough in its 41-point loss to North Melbourne."They were very, very disappointing," Brereton said. "They are a talented lot and I don't think to a man they were hard enough."They were cruelled a little bit on the interchange bench, but we can't use that as an excuse."There's no doubt that after the first or second goal in the last quarter they looked up and said, 'This is one that we can't win' and they gave up." Brereton said too many Melbourne players refused to produce second efforts. "Brad Green is captain of Melbourne, but he is actually reflective of the way they go about it," Brereton told The Sunday Footy Show.

Miles of smiles as Fevola fires up
By Sam Landsberger

TWO months ago, and with relations at a league low, it looked a pipedream. But Melbourne and Casey officials united in celebration with Brendan Fevola at the forefront, fresh from a match-winning batch of goals. The star forward finished with five, but it was a burst of four third-quarter goals in 15 minutes, improved defensive pressure and an ability to work in tandem with the Demon forwards that had Scorpions officials beaming after the 27-point win against Bendigo at Casey Fields. Melbourne coach Dean Bailey's excitement, or perhaps relief, stemmed from the fact that despite another horror week of injuries, he has an impressive pool of depth from which to choose. Raw ruckman Max Gawn, 19, was promoted to the senior side and dominated the stoppages in the second half as well as marking strongly around the ground. "You'd have to be Blind Freddy to not recognise that (an AFL ruck spot) is there, so he's put his hand up and now it's up to the selectors," Melbourne development coach Brad Gotch said. Matthew Bate's 20th disposal was the goal of the day as he leaned back from 55m. Jordie McKenzie, in his return from injury, gathered 24 touches and ran out the game well.
