TOM McDonald says the lack of fight from the Demons against the Giants at the MCG on Sunday was one of the most disappointing aspects of their 64-point loss.
Reflecting on the loss on Monday at AAMI Park, McDonald said the Demons “just didn’t come to play”.
“That’s probably one of the worst things that you can have in footy – not having the fight in you to keep going,” he said.
“It was a very disappointing day.”
McDonald said the lack of hunger to save face in the final quarter was also another frustrating part of the loss.
“That inability to close games out has been a real issue and that could stem from losing for five or six years straight,” he said.
“That’s the confidence and mental issue.”
McDonald said the Demons “deserved to be booed” by their own supporters and added that “if we keep playing like that, we’ll get booed again and again”.
“It’s a horrible feeling and you feel bad for supporters and the people who came to watch us play, because they put their money where their mouth is and come and watch us – and pay to support the team,” he said.
“We didn’t put the effort out there and didn’t put the performance out there that they deserved to come and watch.
“Some of the performances early in the year, there was excitement around the team and it’s just totally gone back to square one since the mid-year break and we’re really, really disappointed in that.”
McDonald said he didn’t feel helpless and added that “you can fight your way out of it”.
