IN TWO days’ time, Melbourne’s AFLW side will step foot on to the club’s spiritual home of the MCG in what will be a ground-breaking Preliminary Final.

The Saturday game will be the first official AFLW match to take place on the home of football, a momentous step in the competition's history.

During this week’s episode of Lil & Ben, club foundation player Lily Mithen said she'd never previously thought of the opportunity as possible growing up in women’s football.

“I’ve always hoped and wished I could play on the ‘G and I’ve wondered when that opportunity might come,” Mithen said.

“The AFLW came to fruition, and it wasn’t a thing that we’d play on the ‘G.

“But to know for certain that we’re going to play there in an AFLW game and final, it’s pretty surreal.

“When you see it locked in writing, it’s pretty special and I know a lot of the girls are pretty excited for it too.”

The Demons are preparing to take on the Brisbane Lions in Saturday's final, a team that bring finals experience into the battle as the current reigning premiers.

Melbourne last faced Brisbane in Round 7 at Metricon Stadium, coming out on top, with a kick from Lion Greta Bodey falling short after the siren.

Mithen said the Demons were expecting their opposition to challenge them on the 'G, but were backing their own hard work from throughout the season.

“I’m really looking forward to playing them at full strength, with us at full strength," Mithen said.

"We’ve had plenty of time to recover and reenergise after what was a pretty intense ten weeks of home-and-away footy.

“We play pretty similarly in the sense that the contest is key for both our game styles, to then drive a fair bit of run and carry.

“They’ve got some big keys up forward, so it’ll be necessary shut them down and they’re really strong across the board as you’d expect from a reigning premier.

“They’ll be hungry and I’m really looking forward to playing them."

Tickets to Saturday's game are free for fans, with Melbourne encouraging its supporters to head down to the 'G for a weekend of footy. Tickets will still need to be redeemed via Ticketek
