Skipper not happy with honourable loss
Co-captain Jack Trengove says the Demons can’t be pleased with their effort against the Saints, despite the fact it was their best performance of the season
Although Melbourne went down by 18 points against St Kilda at the MCG on Saturday night, the Demons remained right in the contest until deep in time-on, when St Kilda skipper Nick Riewoldt sealed the win.
Although the Demons pushed the most experienced list in the competition, Trengove said “you can’t be happy with a loss”.
“At the end of the day, we still lost by three goals and it’s really disappointing, because we had opportunities there,” he told melbournefc.com.au.
“But on a positive note, the effort was definitely there. It was just a few things we couldn’t get right in the last quarter, which allowed them to kick a few goals.
“It’s really disappointing that we couldn’t get the win, but it’s a positive that we were a bit more consistent this week. The last two weeks have been a bit more consistent, which has been good.”
Trengove said coach Mark Neeld was able to pinpoint to the players where the Demons fell short in the finish.
“He was happy that the effort was there, but just for a few structural things in the last quarter, which weren’t adhered to and resulted in goals to them,” he said.
“It was disappointing, but one thing he was really happy with was the likes of Jordie McKenzie shutting down [Brendon] Goddard and someone as young as Tommy McDonald to do the job he did on an experienced player like Nick Riewoldt was unbelievable.
“There were some individual efforts that were unreal during the game, but at the end, we couldn’t get the win.”
Still, Trengove couldn’t fault the effort of his team, when he reflected further on the result.
“St Kilda is a very experienced side and they’ve got some great players in their team, so it’s positive that we could take it to them,” he said.
“There was no one point where the game was over - we were always in it right to the end, which was a positive. The effort was there and we made sure it was there right until the end of the game.
“Everyone was out on their feet in the last bit, but we’ve just got to keep driving training and push each other during the week to make sure we keep running out games and have four quarter efforts.”
Trengove, who played his 42nd game in just the start of his third AFL season, said it was an invaluable experience to play on St Kilda stars Lenny Hayes and Nick Dal Santo and co.
“They’re pretty much the best in the competition at what they do,” he said.
“So for us young midfielders, it’s great experience, but there are plenty of things to work on, so we’ve just got to get back on the training track and really work on them.
“And next week, we’ve got to come back out next week with another big effort. But it was one of those games where everyone was out on their feet towards the end and we just couldn’t get there.”
