Todd Viney’s season assessment
Brent had a really good, consistent year, winning our club best and fairest. He’s an in-and-under player, who led the club in clearances, while his kicking inside 50 was better. He’s a really important player for us going forward.

Round-by-round assessment
Comments made by 2011 Melbourne coaching staff members Mark Williams, Brad Gotch and Kelly O’Donnell

AFL: Round 1 v Sydney Swans
Brent had an outstanding game. His inside work was fantastic. Brent had 10 clearances and 13 first possessions. Some of his centre bounce clearance work - at critical times - was really important. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 2 v Hawthorn
Beamer was like he always is - hard at the ball. He spread really well, but probably wasn’t rewarded for it on occasions. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 3 v Brisbane Lions
Brent had a fantastic game. He was strong and hard at the ball and set a great example for all of those around him during the match. He finished with a team-high 36 disposals and also had eight inside 50s. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 4 v Gold Coast Suns
Beamer was very good. He was excellent around the stoppages and gave us first use. It was a fine effort on the back of a tough week. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 5 - Bye

AFL: Round 6 v West Coast Eagles
Beamer didn’t have as big an impact on this game, as opposed to his performance against Gold Coast and his season so far. But he always led from the front with his intensity. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 7 v Adelaide Crows
It was probably Beamer’s best game for the year. It was an outstanding effort, playing inside and winning 19 clearances. He also had 21 contested possessions and used the ball really well. His connection with Mark Jamar was exciting to watch. He stood up as a leader, which was very pleasing. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 8 v North Melbourne
Although Beamer didn’t have a big influence on this game, his leadership and ability to stay focused on his task was very pleasing. He worked hard to get to Andrew Swallow at the stoppages and played his role for the team. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 9 v St Kilda
Brent was solid again. His work in close was good, as was his spread away from stoppages, where he was rewarded with more possessions. He continually led from the front with his voice and physicality. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 10 v Carlton
Beamer’s physicality was very good, as was his direction and leadership. But he needed to focus on his spread away from stoppages and his ball use. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 11 v Essendon
Beamer’s leadership and voice was very evident on the ground. He won the ball inside and used it very well. His spread away from stoppages was dynamic and it was great to see him kick two goals, including one outstanding effort near the end of the game.  Mark Williams

AFL: Round 12 v Collingwood
Beamer worked hard at the stoppages and with his spread. He won the ball well, but we didn’t get as much as we would’ve liked out of his disposals. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 13 v Fremantle
Beamer’s team focus, while being tagged, was a highlight. We managed eight first possessions and six clearances, all under close attention. He continued to break up the play with his aggressive spread. He also forced the ball forward under pressure from stoppage. His tackling was outstanding. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 14 v Richmond
Beamer was very happy to have the big Russian (Mark Jamar) back - they quickly got back into the groove. Brent had a very good game, accumulating 14 first possessions and 11 clearances from stoppages, while being closely checked by Daniel Jackson. He also finished with 30 disposals and five scoring involvements. Beamer led the way with his work ethic, voice and physicality. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 15 v Western Bulldogs
Beamer worked hard in-and-under and used the ball effectively away from stoppage. His defensive pressure was good, as was his voice and direction. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 16 - Bye

AFL: Round 17 v Port Adelaide
Brent won the ball in close, and played a typically hard-working game. His leadership and direction were good, as was his voice. Brent did a lot more work off the ball for his teammates, which helped our young midfielders’ games. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 18 v Hawthorn
Brent was probably beaten on the day. Although he still had great involvement - with seven first possessions and eight clearances - his opponents were equally effective away from stoppage and in general play. His tackling was aggressive, and as always his direction on the ground was fantastic. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 19 v Geelong Cats
Brent was ill and shouldn’t have played in the end. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 20 v Carlton
Brent only had a fair day. His in-close work didn’t have much of an impact, and his defensive work wasn’t great. We needed more from him as one of our leaders. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 21 v West Coast Eagles
Beamer was solid overall. He did a great job on Matt Priddis, who had limited impact on the game. There was a big change in Beamer’s mindset this week. He sacrificed his game for the team. He wasn’t always our hit to target at stoppage, which also allowed our younger midfielders to stand up and take responsibility for clearances. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 22 v Richmond
Again, Beamer had a specific role to play for the team. He carried that out very well. He was still able to win plenty of the ball, with 25 disposals. He involved himself in attack and defence, which was pleasing and he was very strong with his contested possessions. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 23 v Gold Coast Suns
Brent had a terrific game. He won some very good clearances that resulted in scores. He again put his head over the ball, bashed and crashed the ball forward and used his hands intelligently, while under pressure. Beamer finished with three goals and probably missed his easiest shot of the day in the fourth quarter. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 24 v Port Adelaide
Beamer had an outstanding game. He won 35 possessions and had nine tackles. His ability to win the ball at ground level and distribute it intelligently was fantastic. His leadership and aggressive play were highlights. Mark Williams
