THE DEMON Spirit celebrates and unites all involved with the Melbourne Football Club.
It is the fire within the players, staff and fans which is driving the red and blue to success.
While this connects everyone – past and present – whose hearts beat true, late Melbourne great, Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes, represents the Demon Spirit on an even deeper level.
The typography of the ‘Demon’ is inspired by Hughes, who was the first person to refer to the club as Demons, doing so during his successful coaching tenure.
The ‘Demon’ style replicates Hughes’ handwriting, mirrored from a birthday card he gave his granddaughter, Jennifer Allen.
After the release of the Demon Spirit, Jennifer spoke of the pride this has brought their family.
“We are all very excited to know Checker’s handwriting forms part of the 2022 campaign,” she told Melbourne Media.
“My grandfather would be honoured to know he is still remembered.
“The Club’s reference to the past shows a deep respect for the contribution my grandfather made to the club, for which we are truly grateful.
“I wish the club every success going forward and hope we continue to play with the Demon Spirit."
Hughes was at the helm for 258 matches, leading Melbourne to four premierships: 1939, 1940, 1941 and 1948.
