IF MELBOURNE is successful in its quest for the 2021 AFL Premiership, former club captain Garry Lyon will be tasked with handing the cup to Simon Goodwin and Max Gawn.
The selection process for a club ambassador was made challenging by the border restrictions in Western Australia, but Lyon was conveniently in the state for his media duties with Fox Footy.
The two-time best and fairest winner and three-time All Australian was an obvious choice for this great honour, sitting equal 14th on the Demons’ all-time games record list.
Playing 226 matches in the red and blue between 1986 and 1999, Lyon earned a position in Melbourne’s Team of the Century and Hall of Fame.
The star half-forward, who turned 54 on Monday, kicked 426 goals for the Dees – the fourth largest tally of any player in the club’s history.
If the Western Bulldogs are to claim victory at Optus Stadium on the 25th of September, Chris Grant will be given the responsibility to walk the cup on stage.
