MELBOURNE has earned itself the opportunity to break the club’s 57-year premiership drought, securing a spot in the 2021 Toyota AFL Grand Final after an inspired win over Geelong last night.
Coach Simon Goodwin told press post-match how important the emphatic win was for the Melbourne faithful.
“It feels terrific for our footy club,” Goodwin said.
“We’ve worked incredibly hard to be involved in these significant games.
“I sit here and think of all our supporters back home and all the hard times they’ve been through, and we’ve got the opportunity now to do something really special.
“There’s a level of excitement but there’s a level of we still have a job to do.”
The Dees defeated the Cats but a whopping 83 points, a particularly impressive display having managed a mere four-point win over Geelong just three weeks ago.
Goodwin said that the confident performance gives the side further belief in the way they play.
“Clearly we base our game around our contest and our ability to defend, but I think you saw tonight there’s a potency in the way we attack and we can hit the scoreboard,” Goodwin said.
“Tonight we built that belief, we understand that we handled the moment well and the moment was really about being ourselves.
“We’ve still got work to do, there’s a really big challenge that’s sitting right in front of us and we want to make the most of it.”
The team will now prepare to play in the league’s biggest game of the year, with their opponent still to be determined following the result of the Port Adelaide v Western Bulldogs game tonight.
