SIMON Goodwin says he was “incredibly proud” of his team’s performance against Richmond at the MCG on ANZAC Day Eve, but also frustrated at another missed opportunity to claim the four points.
Melbourne went down by 13 points in a brilliant contest, as it lost ruckman Jake Spencer (shoulder/knee) and forward Tim Smith (ribs), who were unable to finish the match.
Youngster Christian Petracca suffered a knee injury early in the match, but played out the game, while a couple of other Demons finished the night sore.
Despite the loss of personnel against the Tigers, Goodwin said his side needed to make the most of its chances and he was also frustrated by his team giving up goals late in terms.
“We’ve just got to maximise our opportunities better and find a way to the win the game,” he said.
“That’s our challenge as a group and as a club – for our coaches, for everyone in our footy department, when the time comes in a game, we’ve got to find a way.”
Meanwhile, Goodwin praised the performance of young midfielder Clayton Oliver, who continued his outstanding start to the season, with 32 disposals.
“He’s improved a lot,” he said.
“He’s a competitor – he had 19 contested possessions and he’s just got to keep doing what he’s doing during his week, and preparing well.
“He’s going to be an incredible player for the club. He’s a real talent we’ve got there.”
