CO-CAPTAIN Jack Grimes is optimistic he will return for Melbourne’s round 15 clash against the Sydney Swans.

Grimes, who is on the long term injury list after suffering a collarbone injury against Carlton in round six, said he was hopeful of playing on July 7 at the MCG.

“I’m on the long term injury list for another two games after the bye – the St Kilda and Bulldogs matches – so I’m hoping to return the week after,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

“Whether that be through Casey or if I’ll be able to squeeze back in [the AFL], I’m not too sure at this stage.”

Grimes said his rehabilitation had been progressing strongly.

“It’s going really well - it’s going as well as I could’ve possibly hoped for. I caught up with the surgeon earlier this week.  It looks really good and I basically got the all clear to slowly build into some contact,” he said.

“It’s more overhead marking which I haven’t been able to do, but apart from that it’s been great and I’ve been able to keep running and keep fit, and keep the ball skills going.

“It’s just a matter of finally getting that contact and the confidence back in it, but I haven’t really felt it since the first week or so.”
