Watts set to make his debut
Melbourne confirms that No.1 draft pick Jack Watts will make his debut against Collingwood in the Queen's Birthday match
The 18-year-old, who is undertaking Year 12 at Brighton Grammar School, will play in front of a blockbuster crowd and then complete an exam the next day.
The excitement and anticipation surrounding the key forward's debut has been huge.
At just about every one of Melbourne coach Dean Bailey's media conferences this year, he has been asked when Watts will debut.
The club carefully mapped out his first half of the season, taking into consideration he was 17 when he arrived at the club and was not drafted until November 29 last year, when Melbourne had started its pre-season campaign on October 13.
Watts is the third youngest listed player in the competition, behind Hawthorn's Liam Shiels, who made his AFL debut last round against Adelaide and Swan Campbell Heath, who is sidelined for the rest of the season with a knee injury.
Although itching to play early in the year, Watts did not play an intra-club or pre-season match for Melbourne – instead he was a runner in one hit-out.
He then undertook a specific 10-week training program. This meant he did not play his first match for the Casey Scorpions reserves – Melbourne's VFL affiliate – until April 18.
At the time, Watts told melbournefc.com.au: "I've been training since December and I haven't had any hiccups, which has been really good, so to get out there finally after so much training was a big relief."
After another week in the reserves, Watts made his senior VFL debut against Coburg Tigers, kicking three goals.
But after just one week in the VFL seniors, Watts returned to play for his school side, as the Scorpions had a bye.
Since playing in a draw for his school, Watts has played the past three matches for Casey seniors against Box Hill Hawks (10 disposals), North Ballarat (22 possessions) and last weekend against Geelong (22 touches).
Casey coach Peter German told melbournefc.com.au on Monday Watts was getting closer to his AFL debut, after he was among the best against the Cats.
"Each week he is improving," German said.
"Jack had 22 touches and was steady again. He used the ball well and he played mainly up the ground. He was No.1 with our inside 50 kicks for the game.
"It was a reasonable game and he's starting to show some good consistent form."
Watts, who opted for football over a promising basketball career, zoomed into No.1 draft pick calculations after an outstanding performance in last year's NAB AFL Under 18 Championships. This included four goals in Vic Metro's win over Vic Country.
He was then named All-Australian and won the Larke Medal as the best division one player.
In October last year, Watts recorded some first-class results at the NAB AFL Draft Camp. He recorded the second best times in the 20-metre sprint (2.82 seconds) and agility run (8.03 seconds). He was also ranked in the top 10 per cent at the camp for vertical leap and repeat sprints.
At 196cm and 83kg tall, the incredibly mature and impressive young man, is viewed as a decade-plus prospect for the Demons.
