COACH Mark Neeld has thrown his support behind the club playing extra matches and establishing an annual training camp in Darwin.

Speaking at TIO Stadium on Friday, Neeld said the Demons were excited by the prospect of developing the club in the Northern Territory.

We wasted our inside 50s: Neeld

“We’re hoping over the next twelve months to increase the time we spend up here.

“We’re in the initial stages of planning a training camp up here and hopefully, with some negotiations with the AFL, we could possibly play one or two more games up here.

“So it’s a really good experience.”

In terms of the pre-season training camp, Neeld said it was still in the early stages, but did not rule out the first one being held later this year.

“It’s very much in its infancy stages,” he said.

“We’re investigating the prospect of coming up here to Darwin and doing somewhere between a seven to a 14 day training camp.

“There will be a few of us out and about investigating some venues, so that’s something we want to put into a permanent part of our training calendar.

“We’re hoping to get that off the ground for this year, but there are those little things to sign off and get this and that approval, but that’s what we’re looking at doing.”

Neeld added that Melbourne would look at utilising the recently announced Michael Long NT Thunder Learning and Leadership Centre. Construction of the new centre will start in the coming months, and it is expected to be completed late next year.

The Michael Long Centre will include a state of the art gymnasium, swimming pool and recovery facilities, lecture theatres and classrooms and accommodation.
